How to Clean Cloudy Crystal Glasses Without Damage
Quick Answer: Cloudy crystal is either limescale or detergent film, which white vinegar can remove, or surface deterioration, which cannot be fixed. Wash crystal by hand in lukewarm water with a soft sponge, and rinse well. No cited maker gives a vinegar soak time. Lead crystal can leach lead, and the EPA says to avoid storing or serving liquids in it.
Crystal asks for more care than everyday glass because it is thin, cut and easy to damage, and some of it contains lead. This post covers what makes crystal cloudy, how to clean what can be cleaned, how to tell when the damage is permanent, and the lead question. Stemware routines are in how to clean wine glasses, and storage and general care are in Caring for Fine Glassware.
Why does crystal go cloudy?
Two things, and they behave differently. The first is film: minerals left by hard water, which Libbey describes, or detergent residue, which Whirlpool describes below. Film can be cleaned. The second is surface deterioration, which Libbey calls etching and which Corning Museum of Glass conservators say cannot be fixed.
Dishwashers are one route to both. Crystal maker Val Saint Lambert says a dishwasher can damage glassware and leave a cloudy film, and Whirlpool says feather-edged crystal may be too delicate for one. Where makers disagree on dishwashers is in wine glasses in the dishwasher.
How do you clean cloudy crystal glasses safely?
Start gentle and escalate only if the haze stays.
- Wash by hand in lukewarm soapy water with a soft sponge, at a consistent temperature and with nothing rough or metallic (Val Saint Lambert).
- If a film remains, use white vinegar, neat or diluted with a little water (Val Saint Lambert), or add vinegar to the soapy water (Rückl).
- Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft, non-fluffy cloth.
How long a vinegar soak is safe for crystal is not stated on any page cited here, so there is no number to give. Check the glass often and rinse it, and do not leave it soaking unattended. Do not mix vinegar with other cleaners.
How can you tell if cloudy crystal is permanent?
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Haze that wipes off with vinegar | Limescale or detergent film | Clean it, rinse well, dry promptly |
| Haze that stays after vinegar, possibly with colored shades at an angle | Etching or glass corrosion (Libbey describes the color test for everyday glass) | It is permanent. Libbey says no practical method restores the luster |
| Haze that persists on a valued piece | Unclear | Val Saint Lambert says to entrust it to a specialist |
The vinegar rub test and the film-versus-etching split are covered in how to clean cloudy drinking glasses.
Is lead crystal safe to clean and use?
Cleaning is the same. Use is the question. The US EPA says to avoid storing or serving food and liquids in lead crystal, and that it can be especially harmful if chipped or cracked, because lead can leach from it. Only the maker can say whether a piece contains lead, so check the maker before you serve a drink in it. Stop using a glass that is chipped or cracked.
Where does a polishing cloth fit?
After the wash and rinse, to dry and polish. Val Saint Lambert says to dry crystal with a soft, non-fluffy cloth, and Rückl says to wipe it gently so water does not settle. The Excalibur Brothers Premium Glass Polishing Cloth is our own product, sold on this site. The Premium Glass Polishing Cloth in white is a large microfiber cloth sold as a pack of two, and the collection also has gray and an assorted pair.
When this is not the right choice: a cloth does not remove film, cannot repair etching, and says nothing about whether a piece contains lead. If you already have a soft, clean, lint-free cloth, you do not need another. The Secret to Streak-Free Crystal covers why streaks form.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to clean crystal glasses?
By hand, in lukewarm soapy water with a soft sponge, rinsed well and dried with a soft cloth. That is the method Val Saint Lambert and Rückl describe.
Can you put crystal glasses in the dishwasher?
Val Saint Lambert would not advise it, Rückl recommends hand washing, and Whirlpool says feather-edged crystal should be washed by hand. Check your maker.
How do you clean lead crystal glasses?
The same way as other crystal. Lead is a reason to avoid storing or serving liquids in the glass, per the US EPA, not a change to the cleaning method.
How do you clean Waterford crystal glasses?
Waterford's care guide says to hand wash crystal and glass separately in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth, without twisting the bowl against the stem. It says dishwasher heat, friction and detergent can dull or scratch the surface. The Waterford care guide is written for its own products.
How do you clean cloudy crystal wine glasses?
Hold the bowl and never twist it against the base. Try vinegar on limescale film, rinse well, and accept that etching cannot be fixed.
How do you wash crystal glassware in general?
One piece at a time, with space between pieces. Rückl says to leave space when washing or storing, and that the thin rim is the most fragile part.
