Wine Glass Cleaner: What Works and What to Skip
Quick Answer: The wine glass cleaner glassmakers name is a small amount of mild dish detergent, rinsed well, with white vinegar for limescale film. Skip rough scrubbers, anything that leaves residue or scent, and homemade blends of different cleaners. No maker cited here recommends baking soda or a spray glass cleaner for drinking glasses.
Most wine glasses need nothing more than a mild detergent and a thorough rinse, and the harder problems have specific fixes. This post sets out what glassmakers name, what they do not mention, and what to leave out. The full routine is in how to clean wine glasses. What is the best cleaner for wine glasses?
Mild dish detergent, used sparingly, and rinsed until none is left. Everything else is for a specific problem.
| Cleaner | Use it for | What the maker says |
|---|---|---|
| Mild dish detergent | Everyday washing | Rückl: only a small amount. Waterford: warm soapy water, rinsed thoroughly |
| White vinegar | Limescale film | Val Saint Lambert: neat or diluted with a little water. Rückl: can be added to the soapy water for stains and dried dirt |
| Rubbing alcohol | Label marks, spots and stains | Val Saint Lambert: on a soft cloth, as its own step |
Does dish soap leave a residue on wine glasses?
It can, if it is not rinsed off. Waterford says to rinse thoroughly after washing, and Whirlpool says the wrong amount or type of detergent can leave a film. Scent is a separate question that none of the makers cited tests. A glass you drink from will pick up whatever is left on it, so an unscented detergent is the cautious choice. That is a judgment, not a maker rule.
Can you make a homemade wine glass cleaner?
Vinegar and water is the only homemade cleaner that more than one maker names. Val Saint Lambert also lists coffee grounds, raw potato, toothpaste and an oil and vinegar rub. The other makers cited here do not mention them, so they are left out. Baking soda is not on any of these pages either.
Do not blend cleaners into a recipe. Val Saint Lambert lists vinegar and rubbing alcohol as separate remedies, not a mix. Poison Control warns that mixing bleach with an acid, which includes vinegar, makes chlorine gas, and that mixing bleach with ammonia makes chloramine gas.
Are store-bought glass cleaners worth it?
The store-bought products the cited makers name are for dishwashers, not sprays. Whirlpool names phosphate-free detergents and a rinse aid. Libbey names a rinse agent and a detergent additive to strip hard-water film. No page cited recommends a spray glass cleaner for drinking glasses. Poison Control notes that ammonia is a common ingredient in glass cleaners, so read the label before you use one on something you drink from.
Where does a polishing cloth fit?
After the rinse, not instead of it. A cloth is not a cleaner. The Excalibur Brothers Premium Glass Polishing Cloth in white is our own product, sold on this site, and it also comes in gray or an assorted pair. It is a large microfiber cloth, sold as a pack of two.
When this is not the right choice: a cloth will not remove film, stains or etching, and it is no substitute for rinsing away detergent. If you already dry glasses with clean, lint-free towels, you do not need one. More care guides are in The Codex.
Frequently asked questions
Can you clean wine glasses with baking soda?
None of the maker pages cited here mention it, so this post does not cover it. Mild detergent, then vinegar for film, is what the makers name.
Is there a glass cleaner recipe with vinegar and alcohol?
No maker cited gives a mixed recipe. Val Saint Lambert lists white vinegar for limescale and rubbing alcohol on a soft cloth for label marks and stains, as separate remedies. Use one at a time, and rinse.
Can you use window cleaner on wine glasses?
No maker cited recommends it. Poison Control notes ammonia is common in glass cleaners. If a product is not labeled for tableware, use detergent and rinse instead.
What dishwasher detergent is best for wine glasses?
Makers differ. Val Saint Lambert advises liquid or gel detergent and says to avoid tablets and 2-in-1 tablets with salt. Whirlpool names high-quality phosphate-free detergents plus rinse aid. Libbey says to use minimal detergent.
Should you use soap on a decanter?
Waterford says to wash the inside of a decanter with warm soapy water, then rinse and dry. The Corning Museum of Glass conservators suggest a mild detergent and a thorough rinse with distilled or deionized water.
Can you use vinegar on wine glasses every time?
No page cited says to. Makers name vinegar for limescale film, not as a routine wash. Use it when a glass looks hazy, then rinse well.
